Later vs Buffer: which pricing model fits your account count

Later bundles profiles into social sets, Buffer charges per channel. That one difference decides which is cheaper for you, and the crossover is sharper than expected.

Later and Buffer do the same job and price it in opposite ways. Later sells bundles of profiles, Buffer sells individual channels. Almost every real difference in your bill comes from that, not from features.

We build Bleam, an Instagram content tool, so we compete with both in a narrow sense. That is why this page is a comparison of the two of them rather than a pitch, and why the section about us is at the end and mostly caveats. Prices were read from both pricing pages on 5 August 2026.

The short version:

LaterBuffer
Entry price$18.75/mo billed yearlyFree, then $5/mo per channel
UnitSocial set of 8 profilesOne channel, one account
Post limit30 per profile per month on StarterUnlimited on paid plans
Users1 on Starter, 2 on GrowthUnlimited on Team

Free planNoYes, 3 channels

The pricing crossover

Buffer charges $5 per channel per month on Essentials, or $10 on Team. Three accounts is $15. Ten is $50. Twenty is $100.

Later charges $18.75 a month billed yearly for Starter, which includes one social set of 8 profiles. Growth is $37.50 for two sets, or 16 profiles. Scale is $82.50 for six sets, or 48 profiles.

So at one or two accounts Buffer is clearly cheaper, and its free plan may cover you entirely. Somewhere around four accounts the two meet, and past that Later's bundles pull ahead because you are filling a set you already paid for.

Post limits are the trap

The number people miss is Later's per profile posting cap. Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month, which is one a day. Growth raises it to 180. Only Scale is unlimited.

Buffer does not cap scheduled posts on paid plans. Its free plan allows 10 per channel, refillable as they publish.

If you post more than once a day per account, Later Starter runs out before the month does, and the upgrade to Growth doubles your bill. Check your actual posting rate before choosing on headline price.

Users and teams

Later's Starter plan is single user. Growth allows 2, Scale allows 4. If more than one person touches the calendar, the entry plan is not viable and the comparison shifts to Growth at $37.50.

Buffer's Team plan at $10 per channel includes unlimited team members, which is the better structure for a small team on few accounts, and a worse one for a solo operator on many.

Which to pick

Pick Buffer if you run fewer than about four accounts, want a free tier to start on, need more than one person posting, or publish to Bluesky, Mastodon or Google Business Profile.

Pick Later if you run more accounts than that, especially if they cluster into groups of roughly eight, and you post around once a day per profile.

Pick neither if the problem is that nothing is in the queue. Both tools assume the content exists. That is a different purchase, and we wrote about it in Later alternatives and Buffer alternatives.

Where Bleam sits

Bleam generates Instagram carousels, single posts and captions from a brand kit, then schedules and publishes them. Rp 50,000 a month for Scheduler, Rp 299,000 for Pro, Rp 699,000 for Max, billed in rupiah.

It is not a replacement for either tool for most readers of this page. Instagram only, no TikTok or LinkedIn or X, no DM or comment inbox, and pricing and support built for the Indonesian market. If you need the breadth Later and Buffer offer, buy one of them.

If you are an Indonesian brand posting to Instagram alone and the bottleneck is making the posts, try Bleam.
